Harbor Town is one of the nation's most fully developed and successful Traditional Neighborhood Developments (TND). Located on Mud Island adjacent to downtown Memphis, Harbor Town contains 500 houses, a shopping district, a small private school, and several town greens. Its streets are restrained; its architecture is classic and pure; its master plan seamlessly integrates public buildings and private spaces.

Harbor Town is filled with nature trails, ponds, and walking trails that connect throughout the town. The marina has over 50 boat slips available. The mixed-use aspect is coming together wonderfully: You can stay on the island if you wish because the support services are there, which cuts down on the number of car trips you have to take. The careful thought that went into Harbor Town during its inception has paid off.

Linked to Memphis by a bridge that was completed in 1987, the island is easily accessible from downtown but is also uniquely self-contained. Memphis' central business district is visible from the island and provides an urban reference for the village-scale community. The initial approach to Harbor Town will reveal the marina and yacht club as well as a group of homes built on an area that overlooks the marina and is known as "The Point." The village is organized around a traditional street grid that is intersected by a series of diagonal boulevards oriented east to west. The boulevards help define the various single-family, multifamily, and commercial neighborhoods and reinforce strong connections to the two rivers.
